Music connects people, yet discovering local artists and live events remains difficult. This project asked: How might we design a mobile app that helps users confidently explore, discover, and connect with local music?

The Process
For this case study, I followed a user-centered UX process from start to finish. This included conducting secondary research, screener surveys, and interviews to understand user needs, followed by crafting personas, writing “How Might We” statements, and prioritizing an MVP. I then mapped red route user flows, sketched early concepts, and created wireframes and wireflows. Visual direction was developed through a mood board and style guide, and the design was refined through two rounds of usability testing. Each step was driven by user insight, with iteration at the core of the process.

Understanding the Problem
Independent musicians often struggle to gain visibility, while music lovers find it difficult to discover local events. Current solutions are fragmented—users might find an artist on social media, check ticketing websites for event details, and still miss out on shows happening nearby.
To better understand these challenges, I conducted user research through surveys and interviews. I identified two primary user personas.
Challenges Identified:
Music enthusiasts struggle to find reliable, centralized platforms for discovering local artists and events. Independent artists face difficulty promoting themselves and gaining exposure.

Competitor Analysis
After gaining a better understanding of the problem space, I explored existing solutions to see what was working and where there were opportunities for improvement. I focused on music and event-related apps, particularly platforms like SoundCloud and Bandsintown, to evaluate how they handled artist discovery, event promotion, and user engagement. This helped identify gaps—such as limited local event discovery and community connection—that my app could address.

User Research
To better understand my target audience, I began with a screener survey to identify participants who were either passionate music fans or independent musicians. Based on the results, I conducted three in-depth interviews to gather insights about their behaviors, frustrations, and needs when discovering local music and events. These conversations helped shape key features of the app, such as event discovery, artist profiles, and a streamlined ticket purchasing process.

Personas
I created two key personas to guide the app design: Anna, a Music Enthusiast, and Alex, an Indie Musician. Anna’s needs focused on discovering local events, exploring new artists, and easily buying tickets. Alex’s goals centered around promoting their music, booking more gigs, and connecting with fans. Designing for both helped ensure the app supports both music lovers and artists in building a stronger local music community.

MVP Prioritization
To ensure the app focused on delivering the most value with a clear and simple experience, I prioritized the core features that users needed most. Through user research and feedback, I identified the essential elements for the Minimum Viable Product (MVP): event discovery, artist discovery, ticket purchasing, and event reminders. These features created a strong foundation for the app, allowing users to easily explore local music and support artists from day one.

User Flows and Red Routes
After defining the MVP, I mapped out user flows to ensure the most important actions, known as red routes, were simple and efficient. These flows focused on the key tasks users needed to complete, like discovering new concerts, purchasing tickets, and exploring artist profiles. Designing around these critical paths helped create an intuitive experience that supported users’ main goals without unnecessary steps.

Early Sketches Based On MVP
Using the MVP priorities as a guide, I created early sketches to quickly map out the core features and structure of the app. I focused on simple, clean layouts that made it easy for users to discover events, explore artists, and purchase tickets. These sketches helped visualize the user flows and allowed me to start testing ideas before moving into wireframes.

Wireframes and Wireflows
After finalizing the early sketches, I developed low-fidelity wireframes to bring the structure of the app to life. I also created wireflows to map out key user journeys, such as discovering an event, exploring an artist, and purchasing a ticket. These wireframes and wireflows helped ensure that the app’s navigation was logical, intuitive, and focused on supporting the MVP features.

Guerilla Usability Testing
To quickly gather early feedback, I conducted guerilla usability testing with potential users. Testers appreciated the simple navigation but found lack of search filters confusing and suggested better clarity. They also wanted faster access to ticket purchasing from event pages. Based on this feedback, I made the search bar more prominent, clarified the filter options, and added a clear “Tickets” button and “Remind Me” feature to event pages. These changes helped improve the overall flow and usability of the app.

Mood Board
The mood board was created to capture the overall feeling and aesthetic I wanted the app to evoke. I pulled inspiration from live concert photography, city nightlife, and indie music culture. The visuals focus on dark backgrounds with pops of vibrant color, reflecting the energy, excitement, and intimacy of discovering new music in a local scene. This mood board set the tone for the app’s final visual style.

Style Guide
To ensure a consistent and visually appealing design, I created a style guide that outlined the app’s color palette, typography, iconography, and visual elements. Inspired by the energy of nightlife and live music culture, the dark theme with bold blue accents was chosen to create an immersive and modern user experience. The style guide helped maintain visual cohesion across all screens.

Usability Testing
Round 1 Usability Testing
In the first round of usability testing, I tested the prototype with three users to identify early pain points. While users found the app’s layout intuitive overall, they pointed out that the menu button was unclear, the “Events” tab was too broad, and the favoriting feature was confusing. They also wished for a Profile Page to save their favorite artists and events. Based on this feedback, I made key adjustments to the navigation, improved icon clarity, renamed sections for better understanding, and added a Profile Page to enhance personalization.

In the second round of usability testing, users responded positively to the simplified layout and overall flow of the app. The newly added Profile Page was well-received, offering an easy way to keep track of saved events and favorite artists. Larger event visuals also improved the browsing experience, making key content easier to scan. Overall, users found the flow from discovering events to purchasing tickets more intuitive and engaging.

Next Steps
Looking ahead, there are several key features and enhancements I plan to explore in future iterations of the app. One priority is expanding the social experience, adding features like playlist sharing, user profiles, and event check-ins to help foster a stronger sense of community. I’d also like to integrate song identification tools to help users instantly discover music they hear in real life and connect it to upcoming shows. Improving search functionality with smarter filters and more personalized recommendations is another area for growth. Finally, I want to continue gathering feedback from both music fans and artists to ensure the app evolves in a way that serves both audiences effectively.

Reflection & Conclusion
This capstone project gave me hands-on experience with the full UX process, from research and ideation to testing and final design. I learned the importance of listening to users early and often, and how small feedback can lead to big improvements. Prioritizing core features for the MVP helped me stay focused and design with intention.
I gained confidence in usability testing, iterative design, and creating solutions that balance user needs with clear, functional visuals. If I did this again, I’d involve users earlier during sketching and wireframing and allow more time for accessibility and performance checks.
In the end, this project grew from a concept into a complete product by staying grounded in user insights. It reinforced the power of research-driven design and the value of creating seamless, meaningful experiences.
Thank you for exploring this journey with me!
